Scene Seven
An hour later. LIV and NAZ in the park again, sheltering from the rain. NAZ is holding a children’s rucksack with some of his daughter’s toys in it. LIV is very agitated, angry.
NAZ. You said it was / urgent.
LIV. Fucking – don’t rush me –
NAZ. Rush what? You got something to say?
LIV. –
NAZ. You rang me.
LIV. I know, I know, I was pissed off –
NAZ. About what?
LIV. I can’t –
I don’t –
NAZ. Look, if you want to talk, that’s great – but I’m late to pick up my daughter –
LIV. Yeah?
NAZ. It’s fine, I don’t mind, / but can you just –
LIV. From school, you mean? I bet she’s good at school.
NAZ. What?
LIV. Bet she’s a clever little girl if you want her to be a / vet.
NAZ. Liv –
LIV (babbling). I want mine to be a park ranger – I think he’d like it, you know, being outside, looking after all the animals they got in here – feeding them and cleaning them out and playing with them – or maybe like a zoo- / keeper –
NAZ. Liv, please – why did you ring me?
Beat.
LIV. I don’t know. I don’t know. Just –
Tell me more.
NAZ. About what?
LIV. If I help you. If I tell you when it’s happening and you bust into / this party –
NAZ. We talked about this –
LIV. – you’ll take my mum and my brother.
NAZ. We’ll take everyone who’s present.
LIV. Charge them with what, though? – If they’re just hanging out –
NAZ. With being present at a dog fight.
LIV. And then what? For my mum?
NAZ. You know.
LIV. Prison? Tell me.
NAZ. Possession of illegal breeds. Keeping a premises for dogfighting –
LIV. How long for?
NAZ. – possession of dog-fighting equipment –
Good few months.
LIV. But not my dad. You wouldn’t stop his parole.
NAZ. If he’s not involved, he’s not involved. When’s it happening?
LIV. And about this refuge place. You promise we’d be safe there.
NAZ. I told you everything.
LIV. I mean, it sounds nice and that but it’s not home, is it?
NAZ. Look, the offer’s not going to be around for ever –
The team’s getting impatient and they want to make a move.
LIV. I know but this is all –
NAZ. If you don’t want to get done as an accessory you got to give me / something.
LIV. – this is all too fast.
NAZ. It’s not. It can happen. You can just go home right now and pick up the kid –
LIV (laughs). No, I can’t.
NAZ. And I’ll come and collect you tonight.
LIV. I can’t do that.
NAZ. Say you’re going to the shops or something –
LIV. You don’t understand.
NAZ. Make an excuse. Walk out of there –
LIV. No.
NAZ. Just pick him / up and –
LIV (louder). No, I can’t do that. I can’t even –
NAZ. –
LIV. I can’t pick him up.
You see? So how could I – ?
Beat.
NAZ. What d’you mean? Course you can pick him up.
LIV shakes her head.
LIV. He wails. He hates me.
NAZ. Don’t be daft, he’s your kid.
LIV. But I fucked up, so bad. I had him and I – shook him and I –
NAZ.
